
Career Story
My career in IT began in 2007. After graduating as a Developer, I explored various IT roles before finding my niche as a Business Analyst. I pursued a Diploma in Business Analysis and a Post-Grad in Information Technology, excelling in the Business Analysis module. For eight years, I honed my skills in the financial services sector. Early projects were modest, mainly involving the maintenance of existing software, but these experiences granted me a depth of understanding of systems, processes, and people. Business process optimisation and engineering was the air that I breathed. One of my notable contributions during the next leg of my career, was designing Old Mutual's only branded banking product and its supporting digital platforms. This startup environment was perfect for me, igniting my entrepreneurial spirit. Later, I was seconded to several projects within a large-scale and complex business transformation program. These projects aimed to deliver tangible benefits to the organisation’s customers through its products, policies, and operations. This was when I first worked with UX Designers, and was tasked with developing a CX Metrics Framework to measure the maturity of Old Mutual's customer experience. I fell in love with User-Centred Design, enrolled in a UX course, and landed a UX job. While settling into my new role, I helped to build the UX practice. Fast forward a year and I was designing for all the financial institution’s digital touch points and products including a learning platform, a customer portfolio management platform, an investment centre. My team was exceptionally collaborative, multi-disciplined, and cross-functional. I enjoyed wearing various hats to fulfil team obligations. As a side project, I led the effort to design our team's way of working for the smooth delivery of products and features. I even dabbled in Conversation Design. It was an exhilarating period. I learned a great deal and was feeling confident to explore something new, so I jumped at the opportunity to venture into new territory as a Service Designer. My days were filled testing the efficacy of the operations and systems enabling business services. I could draw from principles of design thinking, user experience design and business strategy to address the complexities of delivering the services. Service Design revealed the bigger picture and nudged me toward entrepreneurship. Today, I manage and operate Hummingbird Human Experience Design. As the owner of Hummingbird HXD I teach small business owners about user and customer experience and how to apply principals of both in their ventures. I also design and build my client's websites. I am grateful for every twist and turn in my career that broadened my mind. I am equally grateful for every obstacle placed in my path that matured me and every achievement that motivated me. I am blessed.
